About the Fritz Wolf Society

Ladies and Gentlemen,
We are glad to introduce to you the Fritz-Wolf-Society (Fritz-Wolf-Gesellschaft e.V.)
The Fritz-Wolf-Society is a non-profit-making organization and it was founded on 17th June 2003.

Since the 19th century cartoons and caricatures are a special genre in pictorial art. They employ artistic techniques to treat current topics in witty or sarcastic ways in order to amuse or dismay the onlooker and to make him think again. Collections of the works of famous cartoonists bare witness to the issues and styles of an epoch. Therefore, Osnabrück University secured almost the complete oeuvre of Osnabrück's cartoonist Fritz Wolf, who was well-known in Germany and abroad.
Prof. Dr. Harald Husemann had met Fritz and Edith Wolf through Ingrid Recker, Deputy Director of Osnabrück University Library. Together with Dr. Eilhard Cordes, Director of Osnabrück University Library, he initiated an exhibition of Wolf's cartoons for the latter's 80th birthday in 1998. This exhibition "Der mit dem Wolf lacht" [allusion to the film "Dances with wolves"] led to the proposal of a foundation to secure Fritz Wolf's collected works for posterity. Osnabrück's mayor Hans-Jürgen Fip and Prof. Dr. Rainer Künzel, President of Osnabrück University, supported this move and developed plans to make Osnabrück a Centre for Critical Cartoons and Caricatures. In June 2001 Fritz and Edith Wolf signed the documents in Osnabrück's Hall of Peace which established the Fritz-Wolf-Foundation in the joint care of the city and the university of Osnabrück. The Foundation received the almost complete collection of Fritz Wolf's originals. The University Library had previously made Fritz Wolf an honorary member. It now assumed the responsibility for preserving and cataloguing his work. Fritz Wolf died suddenly and unexpectedly in December 2001, leaving some major work unfinished.
Although most cartoons never loose their edge, their topical references sometimes get lost over the years. The political or social issues which they treat, have receded into the past and some of the actors are no longer easily recognizable. An invaluable "treasure" like Fritz Wolf's oeuvre therefore needs scholarly annotations and explanations (including the articles which they illustrated in their time to make them accessible to a wider public. The Fritz-Wolf-Foundation and Osnabrück University see this as their main mission. On his nephews initiative, friends and admirers of Fritz Wolf founded the Fritz-Wolf-Gesellschaft (Fritz Wolf Society) in June 2003 to support the Foundation and Osnabrück University in their attempts to make Fritz Wolf's cartoons readily accessible to a wider public.
